Equestrian events to enrich economy, sports: HK official

HONG KONG, July 8, 2005 (Xinhuanet) -- The 2008 Olympic equestrian events to be held in Hong Kong will promote the city¡¯s development of elite sports, enhance community vitality and boost the economy, Hong Kong Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho said on Friday.

The Sports Institute and Penfold Park in Sha Tin will be a corevenue for staging the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian events and The Jockey Club¡¯s Beas River Country Club and Golf Club in Fanlingwill be used for cross-country events, he said at a press conference.

Ho said it is the city¡¯s honor to partake in the Olympics. " Hong Kong people are taking a favorable and positive view towards this once-in-a-lifetime event and sharing the joy of our country."

He said Hong Kong will offer a risk-free environment for participating horses and a cost-effective approach to staging the events due to its adaptive use of existing facilities.

The equestrian events for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games have been relocated to Hong Kong, President of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) Liu Qi announced at the 117th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Singapore earlier Friday.
