2005-06-30 09:58:00   IOC

29 June 2005 - Construction has begun on the Olympic Village for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad ¨C Beijing 2008. The Village, which is part of the Olympic Green area, is expected to accommodate 16,000 athletes and officials during the Olympic Games and 7,000 athletes and officials during the Paralympic Games. The Village is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2007 and will be transferred to the Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad ¨C Beijing 2008 (BOCOG) at the beginning of 2008.

The Olympic Village
The Olympic village will open to the athletes and officials two weeks before the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Games. The residential area of the Village will consist of 22 six-floor buildings and 20 nine-floor buildings, as well as a clinic, restaurants, a library, a recreation centre, gyms, swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts and jogging tracks. The international area of the village will be used for the NOC team-welcome ceremonies and for other reception activities.

Prime Position
The Olympic Village, which covers a total area of 66 hectares, lies at the North end of BeijingĄ¯s central axis and has the Olympic Forest Park to its North and the major Olympic venues to its South. The village will join a long list of important sites on the central axis, including the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven .

Environmentally Friendly
The Beijing Olympic Village will feature some environmentally friendly designs and facilities. The amount of green space in the residential area of the Village will be about 40%, rising to 50% for the whole of the Olympic Village. Some of the lighting in the Village will use solar power, as will some of the hot water production, which will use solar heat collecting tube technology. A rain water collecting and reuse system will also be installed and all the toilets will use water-saving technology.

Once the Games are over, the Village will be taken over by a private development company, which will remodel the apartments into residential buildings. This will ensure that the Village continues to serve the Beijing community long after the Games are finished. The residential project will be on the market before the Olympic Games begin.

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad ¨C Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 August 2008 until 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.
