Sports career: Began gymnastics training at the age of eight. Entered the Guangxi team at 10. Chosen by the national team for intensified training in 1980.

At present: Retired after the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and entered the business circles by joining the Jianlibao Group in Guangdong. Over the years he has achieved tremendous successes as a gymnast-turned-businessman, setting up an international gymnastics school in the United States and establishing the Li-Ning Sports Goods Company, whose products named after himself have been the official wear for Chinese sports delegations to many major world tournaments. Today the company, the most successful home-grown sporting goods enterprise in China, boasts some 600,000 stores-within-stores and over 2,000 sales outlets in 90 percent of mainland cities.
