Sports career:
Began volleyball training in Chengdu Spare-time Sports School in 1975. Taken on by the Chengdu volleyball team the following year. Joined the Sichuan provincial team in 1977 and the national team for intensified training in 1979.

1981 World Cup - 1st
1982 World Women's Championship - 1st
1982 New Delhi Asian Games - 1st
1983 China-US-Japan Super-Three Women's Volleyball Meet - 1st
1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games - 1st
1985 World Cup - 1st
1986 Czechoslovakia World Women's Championship - 1st
1986 Seoul Asian Games - 1st

Honours:
1980 - Awarded the title of Master of Sports
1983 & 1984 - Twice awarded National Sports Medal of Honour by the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission
1984 - Named National "March 8th" Red-Banner Holder by the All-China Women's Federation
1985 - Awarded the title of International Master of Sports
1986 - Selected one of National Top Ten Athletes

As deputy captain of the Chinese national women's volleyball team, Liang Yan is the only member of the team which clinched five straight wins at major world tournaments in the 1980s.
