Sports career: Learned to play table tennis at age three under the guidance of his father. Recruited into the People's Liberation Army Team in 1980. Joined the national team in November 1988.

At present: Student at the Xi'an Physical Education Institute after retirement. In 2002 he was a senior colonel. As the only athelete from the Chinese Army who holds the rank of major general, he is now the chief coach of the Army's "August 1st" table tennis team.
