(Beijing, January 19) The 13th Symposium on Sports Exchanges across the Taiwan Strait was held in Beijing on January 18, 2010.  Present at the meeting were Liu Peng, President of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), Feng Jianzhong, Vice President of the COC, Thomas W. Tsai, President of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, together with three of his vice presidents, as well as representatives from the sports circles across the strait.

During the meeting the two sides reviewed sports exchanges across the Taiwan Strait in the past year and made a plan for further exchanges between the two Olympic committees in 2010. They also exchanged views on such issues of common interest as further strengthening and promoting sports exchanges and cooperation across the strait. At present, they noted, with the important historical opportunity to further push forward peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait, the two Olympic committees should lose no time to strengthen ties in sports and contribute to the joint progress and mutual understanding between the two sides. After the friendly negotiation, the two sides agreeed to launch 12 key programs in the new year and  encourage their local sports assocations and organizations to carry out various forms of sports activities for each other.

The annual Symposium on Sports Exchanges across the Taiwan Strait, a sports meeting of the highest level between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, was jointly initiated by the COC and CTOC in 1997 and hosted by the two sides by turns. This time, at the invitation of the COC President Liu Peng, a 13-member delegation from the CTOC led by President Thomas W. Tsai arrived in Beijing on January 18 to attend the symposium. After the meeting the delegation will visit Jiangsu and Shanghai and go back to Taiwan on January 24.
