JAKARTA, May 9, 2004 (Xinhuanet) -- The International Badminton Federation (IBF) held the 65th annual general meeting (AGM) in Jakarta, the venue for world team championship Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, on Sunday.
During the meeting, Chinese badminton legend Li Lingwei was presented with a prestigious International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s Women in Sport Award "for her contribution to the development and participation of girls and women in sport," the IBF said in a statement after the meeting.
The 39-year-old Li Lingwei, who has won two world championship titles, was also selected as one of IBF council members along with five other candidates.
Following the annual general meeting, the IBF council met to decide the host nations for the 2006 world championships and the 2007 mixed world team championship Sudirman Cup. Madrid was finally named host for the 2006 world championships and Glasgow for the 2007 Sudirman Cup.
The 2005 world championships will be held in the US city of Anaheim and the 2005 Sudirman Cup will run in Beijing.
Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri gave a VIP welcome to delegates from 137 countries and regions at the presidential palace preceding the AGM.
"Never before a head of state opened the IBF conference," said Sulistyanto, chairman of the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup organizing committee.
