July 17, 2009 - The annual Pearl River Crossing Event is expected to take place in Guangzhou next week. Citizens show great enthusiasm in supporting the event, with more than 4,000 people applying to be volunteers, who will provide reception, first aid, order maintenance, goods distribution and logistic services. According to a survey by organisers, 94% of the applicants hope this volunteering experience would help them better prepared for the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games.

Among the applicants, the youngest is only 15 while the oldest is in his 70s; most can swim and understand Cantonese, with some speaking good English.

The recruitment will give preference to people who have already applied to volunteer at the Asian Games.

Mr Wang Huanqing, Director of the Volunteers Department of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee, said the volunteering service for this event would help building up experience for next year's Asian Games.
