Badminton boosts Malaysia in CYG

16 Sep 2011, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: The Malaysian contingent returned home on Thursday, September 15, after competing in the 4th Commonwealth Youth Games at the Isle of Man, UK, from September 7-13. The young Malaysian badminton players won all seven medals for the contingent, comprising four gold, two silver and one bronze. This final medal tally enabled Malaysia to finish in eighth position out of the 63 countries and territories that took part in the CYG 2011.

Gold (4): Teo Ee Yi and Chow Mei Kuan (mixed doubles), Zulfadli Zulkiffli (boys’ singles), Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean (girls’ doubles), Nelson Heg and Teo Ee Yi (boys’ doubles).

Silver (2): Sonia Cheah and Yang Li Lian (girls’ doubles), Sonia Cheah (girls’ singles).

Bronze (1): Nelson Heg and Lee Meng Yean (mixed doubles).

The Malaysian contingent consisted of 18 athletes (two from athletics, eight from badminton, four from cycling and four from swimming) and eight officials. The delegation was led by Mr Rosmanizam Abdullah, Hon. Assistant Treasurer of the Olympic Council of Malaysia. The 5th Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in Samoa in 2015.
