Liu Peng, Sports Minister of China
14 Apr 2012, Moscow, Russia: In an interview with Kuwait’s Al Watan TV at the 18th Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOC) General Assembly, China’s Sports Minister, Liu Peng, expressed his sincere congratulations to newly elected ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah.
“Sheikh Ahmad has been a great supporter of Chinese sport for the past 20 years as President of the OCA. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate H.E. Sheikh Ahmad on becoming the new president of ANOC,” said Liu, President of the Chinese Olympic Committee.
Asked if the Chinese Olympic Committee offered any support programmes to the international sports community, Liu replied: “China has different sports assistance programmes. During our bidding for and organising of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and 2011 Shenzhen Universiade, China received a lot of assistance and support which played an important role in the success of those games.
“In return, China would like to offer any necessary assistance and support within our capability to those NOCs in need.”
Asked if China could remain No. 1 in the medals table at the London Olympic Games, Liu said the strong competition made it impossible to predict.
“Many NOCs have made great progress in their sports development and athletes are also improving on a daily basis, so the London Olympic Games will be more competitive than ever. If you ask me to predict who will be first or second in the medal tally, I don’t think I’m capable of doing that.”
