2012-05-31 10:57:00 OCA

30 May 2012, Pyongyang, DPR Korea: Professor Ri Tong Gyu, a researcher of the Sports Science Institute under the Academy of Sports Science of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, expects the DPRK women's team to advance to the quarterfinals of the 12-team Olympic Football Tournament in London. The DPRK is in Group G with Colombia, France and the United States.

“In view of the FIFA world rankings, some experts regard Group G as the group of death,” Prof. Ri told the Korean Central News Agency in a recent interview. “Our team will play Colombia in the first match. Colombia has made a rapid development in women's football in recent years. Its team includes experienced players who took part in Women's World Cups.

“The French team, which finished fourth in the 2011 Women's World Cup, is excellent in individual skill. “The US team is gunning for its fourth title in the Olympic Games. This team is believed to consist of players who participated in matches with our team in the 2007 and 2011 Women's World Cups. The team as a whole is high in terms of skill, but many of its players are near 30 years of age.”

Prof. Ri added that the DPRK team consisted of younger players, and had recorded three wins and two draws in five matches at the Asian regional finals for the 30th Olympiad and two wins and one draw in three matches at the China International Women's Soccer Tournament.

“I am sure that our team will advance into the quarterfinals of the Olympiad if it displays high spiritual and collective strength in matches,” he concluded. USA won gold in 1996, 2004 and 2008, and silver in 2000. DPR Korea will play USA on July 31 at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United. (Source: www.kcna.kp)
