27 May 2014, Incheon, Korea: Major multi-sport games cannot function without the contribution of thousands of volunteers to ensure the event runs safely and smoothly for athletes, officials, guests, spectators and media alike. In the latest News Bulletin for the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees, the Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee reports that the training of some 21,000 volunteers is due to finish on Saturday – over three months before the opening ceremony on September 19.

The recruitment of volunteers has already proved to be a big success story for the 17th Asian Games, as 25,827 people applied for the 13,500 openings during the online/offline application period of November 1, 2013, to March 16, 2014. This was a 191.3 per cent application rate – almost twice the number required.

The ratio of female applicants to male was 2.4-1, and 76 per cent of the female applicants were under 30 years old. In addition, IAGOC received 215 applications from students attending 171 colleges overseas.

The bulletin reports that 21,237 applicants were selected for training, which began on April 19 and will finish on May 31. The training has been conducted in 49 sessions at 27 locations in Incheon Metropolitan City and nine satellite cities. (Source: www.incheon2014ag.org)
