The world's top 15 beach volleyball teams plus hosts China began competing for two berths at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo on Wednesday in the city of Haiyang, East China's Shandong Province.

Among the total of 64 competitors from 32 teams of both sexes, 23 have Olympic experience.

Group games will run from Wednesday to Friday, with the men's final on Saturday afternoon and the women's final Sunday morning.

China's campaign at the Haiyang event will be spearheaded by male duo Gao Peng and Li Yang, who started pairing in 2009 and ranked second at the Asian Championship earlier this year. They ranked 38th in the latest Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) rankings.

In the women's competition, Xia Xinyi and Wang Fan, paired up since 2017, carry China's hopes for the Olympics as the world No.23 duo finished second in the Asian Championship.

The Olympic qualification event is the highest-level beach volleyball tournament hosted in China since the 2008 Games in Beijing, with the beach volleyball center court in Haiyang China's third world-level beach volleyball venue.

Haiyang is a coastal city under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Yantai in eastern Shandong.

In 2012, the county-level city hosted the Asian Beach Sports Games and has since hosted other international beach sports tournaments.
