BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wheelchair mixed doubles curling has been provisionally approved as an additional event at the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, the World Curling Federation announced on Friday.

According to the statement, The International Paralympic Committee made the decision at a recent Governing Body Meeting.

The confirmation, which means two curling events - mixed team and mixed doubles - will be staged in 2026 Paralympic Program, is subject to the following conditions.

A reduction of teams in the mixed team event from 12 to 10 - a reduction of 10 athlete quota slots.

The inclusion of no more than eight mixed doubles teams - an increase of 16 athlete quota slots

According to Kate Caithness, president of World Curling Federation, the new discipline will accelerate the visibility and growth of wheelchair curling in the coming years.

In the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, China's wheelchair curling mixed team beat Norway 6-5 in the final for the country's first-ever medal, a gold, in the history of the Winter Paralympic Games. Enditem
