Lausanne (SUI) - FIG Office, July 22, 2010: Yesterday July 21, Prof. Bruno Grandi (ITA), President of the International Gymnastics Federation, was honoured with the International Fair Play Mecenate Award for 2010.

The ceremony was held in Cortona (ITA), the bosom of Etruscan civilisation deep in the heart of Tuscany. The award honours the outstanding career of a great leader and former athlete, who for more than fifty years has championed the development of sport and justice therein.

Commander of the Italian Republic, holder of the National Order of Sport Merit, and decorated with the Olympic Order, Bruno Grandi is highly placed in both national and international sport. Professor of Physical Education, he was a level A gymnast before taking a position as a national coach. After retiring from competition, he would climb through the ranks of the sport hierarchy to become an international judge, President of the Italian Gymnastics Federation for 23 years and Vice-President of CONI for 18 years before taking his seat at the head of the International Gymnastics Federation in 1996, a position he holds to this day.

The International Fair Play Mecenate Award 2010 recognises the proactive and educational approach taken by Bruno Grandi with regard to sport and gymnastics; an architect of the discipline’s success, his efforts have influenced gymnastics’ standing in the Olympic Games.
