BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese short track speed skating team is said to have offered reconciliation with Lijiang side after involving in a scrimmage in the popular tourism destination in Yunnan province a couple of days ago.
Lijiang government press officer Zhang Wenyin wrote in his micro-blog Wednesday that the team expressed their wish to settle the dispute in peace after they fought local security guards on Monday night in Lijiang where they celebrated the Dragon Boat Day.
"After they published the incident on the internet, they offered to make reconciliation," said Zhang in the micro-blog.
On Tuesday, Olympic champions Wang Meng and Zhou Yang posted angry words and pictures on their micro-blogs, saying the team got beaten up by local security guards before their injured teammates were met with indifferent doctors in local hospital. Reports said about 10 athletes were hurt in the brawl.
But local police said after an investigation that the athletes unknowingly violated Lijiang Protection Regulations by making too much noise and singing after midnight, which caused the security guards to step in.
"During the process, they clashed and both sides suffered injuries," police said. "Most of the athletes suffered skin injuries and one of the male teammates Liu Xianwei was diagnosed with multiple contusion."
And Lijiang People's Hospital denied any neglegience of the injured athletes.
"After Liu was taken to the emergency room, doctors immediately gave him a routine examination," said vice director Yang Guangming. "But we can't meet their requirement of staying in a single room as there were too many patients that day."
The short track speed skating team, who already returned to Yunnan's capital city of Kunming for a two-month summer camp after the incident, refused to give any comment.
The team brought back China four gold medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games last year with Wang Meng having three to her name.
