WARSAW, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Polish national football coach Franciszek Smuda announced Poland's provisional team for the European Football Championship (Euro 2012) on Wednesday.
Smuda revealed the 26-strong squad including seven reserves at a gala concert in Warsaw.
On the team are Arsenal FC goalkeepers Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski, Borussia Dortmund stars Lukasz Piszczek, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Robert Lewandowski. Among the surprise selections are Hannover 96 striker Artur Sobiech, Legia Warsaw forward Michal Kucharczyk and uncapped 19-year-old Rafal Wolski.
Smuda admitted he had most trouble picking the defenders and forwards. "I made by choice from players I'd been watching over the past 2.5 years. I know quite a few of them well after coaching them in their division teams," Smuda said.
He added that his main aim was to advance from the group, in which Poland is together with Russia, Greece and the Czech Republic.
"The favourite is Russia but we'll be playing at home and we'll do everything to progress to the quarterfinals," Smuda assured.
Euro 2012, to take place from June 8 to July 1, 2012, will be co-hosted by the two countries' eight cities. The matches will be played in Poland's Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk and Ukraine's Kiev, Lvov, Kharkov and Donetsk.
