YOG stars share their Olympic experiences

2018-04-19 09:02:00

YOG athletes who competed in the Olympic Games PyeongChang 2018 share the lessons they learned on the biggest stage, as they continue their #YOGJourney.

Sara Takanashi (Japan), ski jumping

“Four years ago, I had some really terrible experiences in Sochi. I've been practising in order to take back that experience. It was a big challenge for me to win an Olympic medal. Now that I have the bronze medal I'm somewhat relieved, although I have not achieved my goal of winning the gold medal. Perhaps I may not be a person of the calibre to win the gold medal, although I will continue to work hard using this experience as a springboard.”

Suzanne Schulting (the Netherlands), short track speed skating

“I was just enjoying the [1,000m] final at first and I think that's why I won the gold – because I was enjoying it so much! I want to inspire all the young kids to do short track as well and make short track as big as long track is in the Netherlands. It's amazing. I really have no words for it.”

Arielle Gold (USA), snowboard halfpipe

“I didn't get to compete in Sochi, which was definitely a tough experience to go through, but I think it just made me that much stronger coming into PyeongChang. Just being able to compete [in PyeongChang] was a huge honour. I said before I even competed that I had already had way more fun than in Sochi. So that in itself was a victory, but going home with some hardware doesn’t hurt either!”

Kim Min Seok (Republic of Korea), speed skating

“To do well at a young age just means that, when I get older, I need to work harder. I think I’ve learned a lot. I had great opportunities in order to become an even better athlete. I will do my best until the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, so that I can give an even better performance.”

Ema Klinec (Slovenia), ski jumping

“I'm really happy that I went to the Youth Olympic Games two years ago. It was a similar experience to PyeongChang. Now I'm used to wearing different clothes, eating all together in one dining room and all these things. And there was less pressure in PyeongChang than I experienced [in Lillehammer]. I was fighting from the back [in PyeongChang]!”
