XI'AN, China, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Shanghai men's water polo team smashed host Shaanxi 34-5 in the opening game of the 2020 national men's water polo championship here on Wednesday.

A total of five teams, namely Shaanxi, Shanghai, Hunan, Guangxi and Guangdong, are vying for this year's trophy at the championship held at the Xi'an Olympic Sports Center natatorium.

At the opening clash in the morning, Shanghai drew the first blood from Shaanxi in the very first minute. The visitors, who are the defending champions of the 13th National Games, kept showing their domination in the rest of the one-sided match, scoring 34 times while the hosts only netted five.

"It's a good chance for us to attend competitive matches before the 2021 National Games," said Wang Minhui, the head coach of the Shanghai men's water polo team.

"Compared to the 2017 National Games' gold medalists, we have lots of 'new blood' coming in the team. I am looking forward to clashing with powerhouses like Guangdong and Hunan next year," Wang added.

In another match in the morning, Hunan overcame Guangxi 19-9.

In the second round which kicked off in the afternoon, Guangdong beat Hunan 11-6, and Guangxi hammered Shaanxi 22-4.

The Xi'an Olympic Sports Center, which includes a stadium, a gymnasium and a natatorium, is the first sports facility with access to 5G network in China, according to the operator.

The natatorium is set to hold swimming, diving and artistic swimming competitions during the 14th National Games which will officially open on September 15 next year.

Prior to the championship, the 2020 national U-17 men's water polo tournament concluded at the same venue on Tuesday. Shaanxi beat Shanghai 10-6 in the final clash and claimed the title. Enditem
