AFC: FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers Round 2 to be completed by June 2021

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- All the matches of the second round of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 should be completed by June 15, 2021 with the final round to begin in September, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said Wednesday.

The dates for the Asian Qualifiers and the AFC Asian Cup China 2023, were approved by the AFC Competitions Committee, said the AFC.

It was agreed that all the Asian Qualifiers Round 2 matches, postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, should be completed by June 15, 2021 with match days 7 and 8 taking place in March 2021, and match days 9 and 10 in June 2021 with the final round beginning in September 2021, said the Asian football governing body.

It was also agreed that, in collaboration with FIFA, the 10 match days of the Asian Qualifiers final round should be finished by the end of March 2022 with the Asian and Inter-Continental play-offs proposed for May/June in 2022. The play-off is proposed as a single match.

The committee also agreed that the previously postponed AFC U19 Championship will be staged in Uzbekistan between March 3 and 20, 2021.

The dates for the AFC U16 Championship Bahrain, also postponed from 2020, are to be further discussed, but the committee accepted changes to the eligibility rules for the AFC U16 Championship to allow players born on or after January 1, 2004, to play in the tournament. Enditem
