Madrid gets on the bicycle for the World Environmental Day
2005-06-04 11:13:00   Madrid 2012 candidate city

Next Sunday, June 5th, Madrid will celebrate The World Environment Day by having a bike route with the motto ˇ°For a Greener City, For a Healthier Madridˇ±. The 10 km route begins at 10:30 at la Dehesa de la Villa and will end at la Plaza de Cibeles, where the riders will be able to join the Madrid 2012 festivities. The Olympic candidacy volunteers will help organize the logistics of the event.

From la Dehesa de la Villa, the riders will be organized into groups thanks to the help of the Bikeriders Cycltourist Association PEDALIBRE, they will go down towards Parque del Oeste and there get on Paseo Camoens, passing el Templo de Debod until reaching the Royal Palace. Then, the bikers will take calle Mayor, pass by la Plaza de la Villa, until they reach Puerta del Sol. Then they will pass kilometre 0 of Spain, reach calle Alcal¨˘ end the route at la Plaza de Cibeles.

The Spanish handcycle champion Oscar Utrilla will also participate in this race representing the physically handicapped.

Seeing as this is not an official race, traffic will not be cut off; instead bikers will ride in groups respecting traffic rules. This is a way for the citizens of Madrid to understand the usefulness of a bike in an urban area.

In fact, in its Olympic Project, Madrid 2012 is proposing a Games consisting solely on public transport. In order to make this happen, the Green Biking Ring is being built around the city from which all Olympic venues can be reached. Currently, 18 km have been built and the complete 60 km are foreseen to be finished by 2007.

This coming Sunday, people can familiarize themselves with the bike through this race. People can sign up for free until Friday June 3rd by calling 91 522 38 99 between 5pm-8 pm, in person at the Bike Spain Tours offices (c/(Carmen, 17, 2ª) or at www.bikespain.info/medioambiente2005.index.asp.

The bike route is part of the events planned for the Environmental week held from June 4th till the 10th which the city of Madrid has organized many activities for old and young alike.
