VIENNA, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Austrian coach Hans Krankl quit on Wednesday after failing to steer his team to the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany.
The resignation came two days after the Austrian Football Federation indicated his contract would not be extended when it expires next month.
Austria failed to qualify for the Germany World Cup in the wake of a scoreless tie in Azerbaijan and a 3-2 loss in Poland. They will play England and Northern Ireland in the last two qualifying matches.
Krankl, 52, who took over from Croatian Otto Baric in January 2002, is expected to be replaced by Josef Hickersberger, coach of Austrian champions Rapid Vienna.
