German World Cup ambassador favors Bazil as top competitor for championship
2006-04-10 09:57:00   Xinhuanet

HARMBURG, April 8 (Xinhua) -- German World Cup ambassador Uwe Seeler said here on Friday the formidable Brazil is still the top competitor for the championship of the 2006 World Cup finals, to be unveiled in June.

"Brazil has very good players, ... it is the best team in the world," the four-time World Cupper said in an interview with Xinhua.

However, Seeler said being a champion, every team needs good luck, and Brazil¡¯s fate would depend on the performance of each match.

Seeler claimed that Italy would be second to Brazil to claim the final top title.

"Italy has good players, and it also has a good coach," he said.

However, the former captain and currently honorary captain of the German national team was not optimistic over Germany¡¯s performance.

"Of course I hope Germany can achieve many things. But sometimes you have to be realistic, Germany is not a really good team," he said.

Uwe Seeler, born in 1936, participated in the same four World Cups as Pele did: 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1972. Of those only in 1966 did Germany reach the final where they lost to host nation Englandin extra time.

As a gifted striker, Seeler scored 43 times in 72 international games for the German national team.

Seeler has been appointed as one of the 2006 German World Cup ambassadors and he represents Hamburg, a city that hosts five matches of the World Cup.
