Wukesong Indoor Stadium breaks ground

29 March 2005 - Construction started on Wukesong Indoor Stadium in the western part of Beijing on March 29, 2005.
Witnessing the ground-breaking ceremony were Liu Qi, President of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), Wang Qishan, Mayor of Beijing and other leading officials from the Beijing Municipality and BOCOG.
It is another milestone in the construction of Olympic venues in Beijing, following the ground-breaking of the National Stadium, the National Swimming Centre, Laoshan Velodrome and Beijing shooting range.
Located to the east of the Western Fourth Ring Road, Wukesong Indoor Stadium, which covers 63,000 square metres, will host basketball competition during the 2008 Olympic Games, seating 18,000 spectators. It is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2007.
It is also an important part of the Wukesong Culture and Sports Centre, which will cover 350,000 square metres and include Wukesong Baseball Fields, an Olympic overlay to be constructed later on, and other sports and commercial facilities as well.
Considering post-Games use, the whole centre is planned to be a key commercial, sports and leisure place for residents in the western communities in Beijing.
