At a conference held in Beijing on February 26, 2007 to summarize the capital's greening efforts in 2006, award outstanding workers and mobilize for the work ahead in 2007, Wang Qishan, Mayor of Beijing and Director of the Capital Greening Committee, called for all-out efforts in the city's Olympic landscaping drive in this decisive year of 2007.
In 2007, according to the schedule worked out by Beijing Capital Greening Committee, Beijing will focus on 160 greening projects for the Olympic Games, complete the landscaping for the Olympic Green Central Area, Beijing Olympic Forest Park and Minzu Avenue, and expedite the greening work for the Olympic venues and their surrounding areas within a 200-meter radius as well as roads linking these venues. Meanwhile, the city will make improvements in auditing the projects, coordinating project schedules, and supervising project quality and ensuring their success through careful organization and implementation.
As Wang put it, there were only 529 days left before the opening of the Beijing Games, yet a lot remains to be done in the city greening. He said it was necessary to start right away and work for early completion to meet the demand of the countdown schedule, and it was also important to take advantage of the coming spring season to plant more big trees with a higher survival rate to meet the Olympic landscaping requirements. In the meantime, other routine city greening projects for large greenbelts construction should also be pushed forward to help create green roads and garden-like workplaces throughout the city.
At present, Beijing's greening projects for the Olympics are all going smoothly. The landscaping of the northern part of the 680-hectare Olympic Forest Park has been basically completed and so has 80% of the area in the southern part. One can already sense the initial landscaping effects of the Olympic Green Central Area. Five model venues including the Sports Center in Chaoyang District and the roads linking these venues such as Yaojiayuan Road now present an impressive green outlook. Statistics by the end of 2006 showed that Beijing's afforestation rate had reached 51% and its urban green coverage rate stands at 42.5%.
