Construction of Olympic venues makes smooth progress

(BEIJING, March 28) -- The shell of the 12 new venues for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games has been completed and the construction of the other projects is progressing smoothly, chief engineer Wu Jingjun said on Wednesday.
Renovation and expansion of 11 venues has started and five of them, including the Workers’ Stadium are being fitted up, he told the press covering the quarterly briefing on the progress of the Olympic venue construction.
In addition, work on six out of the eight temporary venues as well as 20 of the 45 training venues has also started.
The construction of other facilities such as the National Convention Center, the Olympic Village, the Media Village, the Digital Beijing Building and the Olympic Green is also underway, he said.
In general, except for the National Stadium, the main stadium of the Olympics, which is expected to be completed before March 2008, all Olympic competition venues are scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, according to Wu. The Beijing Shooting Hall and Laoshan Velodrome are expected to be finished in the first half of the year. In addition, all roads and bridges around the Olympic venues will be completed before the end of the year.
Wu said constructors have taken "sustainable development" to heart in all their projects. Heat recovery, natural ventilation, air purification and other techniques have been applied to save energy, water and other precious resources.
The use of rain water to irrigate the greenery, extinguish possible fires, cool the air conditioners and flush the toilets will for example enable the National Stadium to save on average 60,000 tons of water per year.
Through water recycling, the Fengtai Softball Field will be also able to save 80,000 tons of water yearly.
Covering an area of 6,000 square meters, the sun-powered heating system of the Olympic Village will supply hot water to no less than 16,800 athletes. 40 percent of the electricity will be saved by using recycled water in the air conditioning system of the 42 buildings of the village.
