BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Fire incident merely had limited impact on an Olympic table tennis venue, which will host an Beijing Olympics test event as scheduled, said an official from Beijing 2008 Project Construction Headquarters Office here on Wednesday.
Wu Jingjun, chief engineer from the Office, said the fire on July 2 did not cause major damage to Beijing University Gymnasium, which is due to hold ITTF Pro-Tour Finals from December 13-19.
"The blaze was triggered by improper practice, which set flame to outdoor water-proof materials but the fireproof coating outside the venue worked well to prevent big loss from happening," said Wu. "And the fire was extinguished very quickly."
"The fire did not cause damage to the main structure, the steel structure.
"So the incident had limited impact on the construction and won't affect the December event," he said.
Fire broke out at the gymnasium under construction at Beijing University, located in northwest Beijing, around 8:14 a.m. on July2, setting 1,000 square meters ablaze. No one was injured in the accident according to the Beijing Brigade.
A spokesman with the brigade said they received an emergency call at 8:14 a.m. and immediately sent 17 fire engines to the site and quenched the fire after 9:00 a.m..
The domed 26,900-square-meter gymnasium is one of the 12 new venues being built for next year's Olympic Games. Its construction started in September 2005. Upon completion in August this year, the gym will be able to hold 8,000 spectators.
