(BEIJING, September 13) -- Leftovers from kitchens in Beijing will be collected and transported separately, the local newspaper The First reported.

The pilot project is already in operation at 122 Olympic member hotels and 31 Beijing-based competition venues. Member hotels are hotels that have signed a Lodging Agreement with BOCOG to provide Games-time accommodation for the accredited clients and their guests.

The experimental units will have to report the discarded quantities, the names of the carriers and the final destination of the leftovers on a daily basis.

The waste will be stored in a separate container and carried by qualified transporters in a sealed container to a designated site.

According to the Beijing Municipal Administration Commission, all Olympic venues and member hotels will take part in the scheme before June 2008.

The current daily output of food waste in Beijing stands at 1.22 ton per 10,000 people.
