(BEIJING, Feb. 15) -- According to the General Office of the Capital Afforestation Commission, 80 hectares of greens and parks will be planted in Beijing in 2008.

Since 1999, the Beijing municipal government has launched a huge afforestation project. Many parks and greens, including the Huangchenggen Heritage Park, the Lianhuachi Park, the Qianmen greens and the Desheng Park, were created in recent years. Till the end of 2007, Beijing had greens of 900 hectares, which contain 150 greens with an area of over 10,000 sq m each.

In the year 2008, the Beijing municipal government plans to build 20 more greens with an area of over 10,000 sq m each, and open them to the public for free.

In addition to the construction of greens and parks, 30 greens will be revamped. Street lamps, toilets, shops, seats and leisure squares will be added to supply a better esplanade for citizens.

Furthermore, the renovation of the environment in 100 communities and the construction of 100,000 sq m of roof greens in the area of the Olympic venues and buildings will be completed within the year 2008.
