BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- As the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games draws near, many Russians living, working or traveling in Beijing send their best wishes for the upcoming event.

Lliakhin Yuri, who had lived in Beijing for almost 10 years and now the general manager of an information technology company, took part in the torch relay in Gansu Province. "The Olympics opened a window to me, and allowed in fresh air and made me contented and spirited," he said. "The 50-meter road I went down with the torch in my hand is the most unforgettable 50 meters to me."

As Lliakhin sees it, the event provides opportunity for communications. The hospitable Chinese people can display themselves to the world, while people around the world can take the chance to see the country with their own eyes.

Russian sinologist Liudmila Gubareva said she had been looking forward to the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics for quite a long time. "I am interested in what music and cultural elements would be in play during the ceremony to showcase the spirit of Chinese people," she said.

"The holding of the event would demonstrate the achievement made by the Chinese people and their pursuit of peace and development. The games are bound to be fierce and exciting, I wish that Chinese athletes enjoy a good performance at the Games," she said.

Razov Sergey, the Russian ambassador in China, had noticed Beijing's efforts and development in recent years. The highway and metro transportation in the city grew more comprehensive, and the expanded Beijing Capital International Airport became an example of modern architecture, environmental problems were also dealt with properly, he said.

"The host city is capable of solving the traffic problem during the event, and the organizer also made great endeavor to protect the safety of athletes and guests," he said.

When the reporter met merchant Svetlana Ivanova in an electric appliance shop, she has stayed in Beijing for just three days, but the atmosphere in Beijing had impressed her. "Olympic flags are hanging everywhere from the avenues to alleys, and even on many taxis," she said. "I can sense the coming steps of the Olympic Games. I wish that the Games achieve a success here."
