NANJING, Souteast China, Sept. 3, 2005 (Xinhuanet) -- Athens bronze medalist Zou Shiming expects to win a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games after qualifying for the second round of theboxing finals at China’s 10th National Games here on Saturday.
Zou, who achieved a breakthrough for Chinese boxing after winning the country’s first ever Olympic boxing medal in Athens last year, faced little challenge in the domestic arena.
Dominating the bout from the beginning, the 24-year-old Zou demonstrated his talent and strength in the light flyweight (48kg)class. He landed a flurry of dazzling hits on the face of Zhang Xiaozhou, a young player who apparently lacked experience.
"I did not meet too much challenge today. This is not what I expected," said Zou, who finally won the fight with a lopsided score of 29-9.
When asked about his plan for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Zou did not hide his ambition.
"A gold would be nice. I need to use international standards to guide myself. In the coming several years, I will participate in more international competitions to gain more experience, " added Zou.
According to Zou, he will fight in an international competitionto be held in Russia in October, and then participate in the international amateur boxing championships to be held in the southwestern Chinese city Mianyang in November.
Zou set a new record for Chinese boxers with 31 wins out of 33 international appearances.
