NANJING, East China, Oct. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese judo boss Song Zhaonian has been full of confident that Chinese women judokas could ensure at least one gold in heavy or half-heavy weight categories at Beijing Olympic Games three years later.
"We would never let go the Olympic gold medals in women’s heavyweights unless there were made unpardonable errors in our jobs of training and administrations," said Song, the Deputy Director of Weightlifting, Wrestling and Judo Sports Administration Center of China, during four-day judo competition of the 10th National Games which to conclude on Thursday.
"World champion Tong Wen has proved herself and Liu Huanyuan, who once beat Sun in a national competition, is another promising one in women’s heavyweight category," added the internatinoal A-class referee authorized by Internatinoal Judo Federations (IJF) who’s in charge of the sport of judo in China.
The 24-year-old Tong from Tianjin, caught eyes on international stage of judo in 2003 when she first won a world championship title in Osaka at the women’s open category, and then further solidified her position in Chinese judo national team with a second world title of women’s over 78kg (heaveyweight) last month in Cairo.
She participated in the women’s open judo competition at the National Games here on Thursday, where the strong girl comes out the sole favorite.
Liu, 22, added her name to the world’s biggest names earlier in2004 by stumbling Sun to be crowned for her first national title in the Olympic qualifying event of China, and was regarded one of the best judokas of China in the women’s heavyweight.
The home judoka of Jiangsu province is to again challenge on Sun Fuming’s reigning of China’s judo Thursday in women’s over 78kg event.
A handful of top judokas in women’s heavyweight makes Song confident of good result in Beijing Olympic Games judo tournament, while young stars in other women’s categories, like Olympic silvermedalist Liu Xia from Shandong in 78kg, Liaoning’s Qin Dongya in 70kg, Liaoning’s Li Ying and Tianjin’s Shi Junjie in 52kg, as wellas Chinese Army’s Gao Feng in 48kg, also show qualities to be Olympic gold medalists.
"Of course we’ll keep close watch of the reigning stars as wellas other judokas. After all, there’re still three years before Beijing Olympic Games, and it’s a long time to go," said Song.
