FIFA sticks to its age limit on players at Olympics

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- FIFA will stick to its policy that each team could have only three players aged over 23 at the 2008 Olympic Games, said Issa Hayatou, vice-president of the sport’s world ruling body, here on Wednesday.
"The regulation will not be changed," Hayatou told a press conference after wrapping up a two-day inspection tour of Beijing to assess the city’s preparations for the soccer competition of the 2008 Games.
"Each team is allowed to use as many as three players older than 23."
In an attempt to ensure the World Cup the premier event of the sport, FIFA requires that each participating team of the Olympic soccer tournament should field no more than three over-23 players.
A total of 16 teams will compete in the men’s soccer tournament in the 2008 Olympics, while 12 teams will enter the women’s event,up from 10 at the Athens Games in 2004.
