IOC chief urges two Koreas to form joint team for 29th Olympics

SEOUL, June 23 (Xinhua) -- International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge has urged South Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to form a single team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the state press reported on Friday.
According to the South Korean Yonhap News, in letters to both South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and DPRK top leader Kim Jong-il on June 7, Rogge said he will do his best to help them field a single team for the global sports event,
In March 2003, officials of both South Korea and DPRK agreed in principle to form a single team for the Beijing Olympics in a meeting on the sidelines of the general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees in Athens.
South Korean Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok said earlier on Friday that South Korea and DPRK will discuss the issue of forming a joint team for 2008 Olympics next Friday in DPRK’s border city of Kaesong.
