Kenya out of Beijing Olympics football qualifiers

Kenya will not feature in the football qualifiers for the next Olympics, which will be held in Beijing, China in 2008.

According to fixtures released by Africa’s football governing body, CAF, the east African nation is not among the 41 teams that have been drawn to participate.

The qualifiers, which include teams for both men and women soccer teams, begin in September with Kenya unrepresented in both.

In the run-up to the 2004 Athens Olympics, Kenya was eliminated in the knockout stages by South Africa by a narrow 2-1 aggregate.

According to CAF fixtures, seven countries among them Nigeria and Cameroon have been given byes into the second round of qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic football tournament.

Both countries, winners of the 1996 and 2000 tournaments, are among the seven countries that will not play in the first round.

Angola, Mali, Ghana, Morocco and Tunisia have also been given passage to the second round. The opening leg of the first round of qualifiers, which has 34 countries, will be played between September 1-3.
