BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Sudan will take an active part in the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games, according to a special envoy of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Awad Ahmed al-Jaz, the special envoy and also Sudan's Minister of Finance and National Economy, told a press conference on Wednesday that Sudan's enthusiasm for the Games would not be affected by the International Criminal Court's (ICC) attempts to prosecute President al-Bashir.

The advance members of the Sudanese delegation to the Games have arrived in Beijing. A representative from the advance group told the conference that Sudan will send the largest-scale track and field team in its history to Beijing, including eight athletes of 1,500 meters, 800 meters, 400 meters and other track and field games.

Al-Jaz said Sudan was opposed to politicizing the Olympic Games, applauded China's "sound preparations" for the Games, and wished for their complete success.

An ICC prosecutor formally requested an arrest warrant on July 14 for al-Bashir for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the western Sudan region of Darfur.

Al-Jaz said Sudan strongly opposed the indictment of President al-Bashir. "It is an action that is based on false pretences, hearsay and is politically motivated and unjustified," he noted.

President al-Bashir paid a visit to the Darfur region and meet with people there after the ICC's indictment, and this is the best evidence to prove the indictment ungrounded, he claimed. If the president did commit war crimes in the region, it would be impossible for him to make direct contacts with local people there, the special envoy said.

The prosecution process should be withdrawn, he said, noting that the indictment would not interfere in Sudan's efforts in its peace and development process.

The ICC indictment would also not affect the development of Sudan-China relations, he said, noting that Sudan would increase cooperation with China in agriculture, investment and other areas.

He left Beijing later Wednesday, concluding his three-day visit to China.
