Seoul, the capital of South Korea, hosted the 10th Asiad. Its great success was a prelude to Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 and her economic prosperity of early '90s. Although the weather on the day of the Opening Ceremony was not kind, the Olympic Stadium with capacity of 100,000 was filled to the brim.

The 10th Asiad, with the participation of 3,420 athletes and officials from 27 countries/NOCs, was the first one to be supervised by the Olympic Council of Asia, OCA. Hinting at titanic evolution of future Asiad, bowling, fencing, judo and taekwondo were added from the last one to make up 25 disciplines at this time.

In gold medal tally, China ranked first with 94 golds, one more than those won by host Korea, which showed splendid effort against China and won in total number of medals. On the other hand, Japan slipped further in gold medal ranking, placing third with 58. The era of China-Korea domination begun.
