The 8th Chinese National Ethnic Games were held in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, on November 10-18, 2007. Athletes representing China's 55 ethnic groups gathered in the city vying in 15 title events and entertaining local spectators with splendid ethnic performances.
It was the first time that the quadrennial Games were held outside an ethnic autonomous region and the organizing committee in Guangzhou, which will host the Asian Games in 2010, won high praises from the participants for their excellent organizational work.
Spearheaded by Olympic champions Chen Weiqiang (weightlifting) and Yang Jinghui (diving), some 8,000 volunteers worked on shifts to serve the nine-day Games, and 1,000 service stations were scattered across the city to provide assistance to tourists. More than 1,000 shuttle buses were commuting between the venues from 8 a.m. to midnight every day.
