DOHA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's Jiang Ranxin withstood a late scare to edge teammate Yao Qianxun by 0.3 points and win the women's 10m air pistol title at the ISSF World Championships here on Thursday, securing a quota place for China at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Jiang, the 2023 world champion in the event, finished with 242.4 points in the final, narrowly holding off defending champion Yao, who scored 242.1. Hungary's Veronika Major took bronze with 222.1 points.

Jiang had to overcome a costly lapse in the closing stages, as a 7.6 in the penultimate elimination series saw her surrender the lead to Yao, who moved ahead with 223.0 points to Jiang's 222.8 after 22 shots.

With the title hanging in the balance, Jiang recovered in the final two shots, scoring 10.3 and 9.3 to finish with 242.4 points, while Yao's 9.7 and 9.4 left her just short at 242.1.

"I feel quite happy because both of us actually performed very well today," Jiang, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, said after the final. "I'm quite satisfied with my performance today, and I'm very happy to share the podium with my teammate and help China secure an Olympic quota place."

Yao was also pleased with her performance, describing it as a significant improvement on her form in recent months.

"I think I did reasonably well in this competition. Compared with my performances over the past period, this was a fairly clear improvement, so I'm very satisfied with the result," she said. "I'm also very happy that I could compete alongside my teammate until the end."

Major's bronze secured an Olympic quota place for Hungary, while fourth-placed Haniyeh Rostamiyan of Iran claimed the third and final quota place available in the event.

Later on Thursday, Hu Kai secured another gold medal and an Olympic quota place for China in the men's 10m air pistol, winning with 243.9 points. India's Jaypal Malviya took silver with 242.2, while Czechia's Jindrich Dubovy finished third with 220.9. Both Malviya and Dubovy also secured Olympic quota places for their respective countries.

Hu at one point held a 2.5-point lead over his nearest rival, but saw the margin shrink to just 0.1 points after 20 shots as Malviya closed the gap. The 24-year-old maintained his composure under pressure, closing out the final with two strong series of 20.8 and 21.7 to clinch his maiden individual world title, finishing 1.7 points ahead of Malviya.

"To compete against so many outstanding athletes and come out on top is a great encouragement for me. I was also quite lucky today, as I managed to regain my composure and adjust after making a mistake," said the 2025 silver medalist.

The World Championships continue on Friday with the women's and men's skeet finals and the 10m air pistol mixed team final.
