BEIJING, Sept. 27, 2005 (Xinhuanet) -- China will carry out doping tests in next month’s 10th National Games by the standards of the Olympic Games, a national newspaper reported on Tuesday.
A raft of tougher measures have been put in place in order to ensure the upcoming National Games, which used to be marred by doping cases, the cleanest than ever, according to China Sports Daily.
The paper said that the number of tests during the finals stage of the Games will surpass 1,600, up 20% than the last edition of the quadrennial event.
Blood tests for the Human Growth Hormone will be conducted for the first time in the Games, making China the first country in the world to conduct such tests in its national competition.
As many as 47 doping test stations have been set up, more than any previous National Games and the highest in terms of testing standards.
The doping test staff will be on around-the-clock duty and samples will be sent daily form Nanjing, the main host city for the 10th National Games, to a Beijing-based laboratory.
The lab will report negative results within 24 hours of receiving the samples with positive results reported within 48 hours.
The 10th National Games, billed as China’s mini-Olympics, will be run October 12-23 in Jiangsu Province, east of China.
It is the first National Games since China implemented its first anti-doping law in March 2004 to tighten controls over banned drugs and dole out criminal penalties to serious offenders.
Chinese sports authorities have planned to use the coming National Games as an important warm-up for the doping tests during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
