January 28, 2009 - WADA’s Vice President, Prof Arne Ljungqvist, received on January 19 the Swedish sport’s “Award of Honour” during a Sport Gala organized by Swedish TV channel SVT and the Swedish sport community in Stockholm. This annual ceremony honours individuals (athletes, coaches, administrators) for their action in sport.
Prof Ljungqvist received the award from Swedish heptathlon and long jump champion Carolina Kluft, an active anti-doping advocate, for his action in favour of clean sport.
Prof. Arne Ljungqvist’s biography:
Prof. Arne Ljungqvist (MD, PhD), who represented Sweden in high jump at the Games of the XV Olympiad in Helsinki in 1952, has dedicated his career to the health of athletes. He has held several influential posts in the field of sport and anti-doping, including chairmanship of both the International Olympic Committee's and the IAAF's (Track & Field) Medical Commissions. Since the establishment of WADA in 1999 and until his appointment as Vice President in 2008, Prof. Ljungqvist served as Chairman of WADA's Health, Medical and Research Committee, playing a pivotal role in the development of science and research to combat doping in sport.
