Rower Guo Linna tested positive for doping in National Games

JINAN, East China, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Guo Linna from Henan rowing team was tested positive for banned substance at the 11th National Games, facing a likely four-year ban, the Chinese Olympic Committee said on Sunday.

According to Zhao Jian, an official from the Anti-Doping Commission of the Chinese Olympic Committee, the woman rower was found positive for 19-norandrostenedione in A sample in an out of competition test on October 12.

Guo is the first case of the kind in the on-going games.

According to the games regulations, the organizing committee of the 11th National Games decided to disqualify Guo from the games and her team's results were announced invalid.

Guo's team took part in the semi-finals of the lightweight women's double sculls and lightweight women's quadruple sculls on Saturday.

And at the same time, the sports delegation from Henan province for the games, who is disqualifed for the award of sportsmanship contest in the games, is given a severe warning within sports field in China.

As for Guo herself, the rower is now facing a possible four-year suspension.

Under the Chinese Olympic Committee rules, any athlete taking banned substance during the 11th Chinese National Games is banned for four years and will be expelled from the Games.

"The Anti-Doping Commission will make further investigation into the case and will later release the result, "said Yuan Hong, official of the Anti-Doping Commission.

"Guo may face a four-year ban by the Chinese Rowing Federation, "she said.

Jiang Zhixue, head of the Anti-Doping Commission, restated the importance of anti-doping efforts prior and during the Chinese National Games slated for Oct. 16 to 28.

"We felt astonished and sad about this doping case. The Chinese Olympic Committee have zero tolerance to rule violations and doping scandals, trying to provide fair and smooth competitions," he added.
