BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has done an effecitve job since its founding, said China Anti-Doping Agency on the 10-year anniversary of the world anti-doping body here on Tuesday.
WADA was established on Nov. 10, 1999 after the International Olympic Committee made the initiative and convened the first World Conference on Doping in Sport in Lausanne in February 1999 when a propasal was put forth to set up an independent international agency.
"WADA is still young but it has done so much work in anti-doping," said Zhao Jian, vice director of China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA).
"Their setting up unified standards and coordinating efforts between sports organizations and governments proved to be effective. The fight against doping has been making big progress," he said.
Before 1998, doping cases were ruled under different definitions, policies and sanctions under different international sport federations and anti-doping organizations.
When the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) went into effect in 2004,it provides the framework for anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sport organizations and among public authorities.
In 2005, UNESCO passed the International Convention against Doping in Sport which had been signed by around 130 nations and regions. China inked the Convention in 2006.
