Lausanne, Switzerland, August 12, 2010 – The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) announced today that Mr. Gregory Berrios, Puerto Rico, has been found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation (presence of the Prohibited Substance N-Didesmethylsibutratmine in his bodily specimen) according to article 2.1 of the FIVB Medical Regulations.
Mr. Berrios had been tested during the V Men`s Pan American Cup 2010, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was provisionally suspended on 13 July 2010.
The FIVB Anti-Doping Hearing Panel found that even though Mr. Berrios had no intention to enhance his sporting performance, he was however seriously negligent in taking dietary supplements which contained above Prohibited Substance mentioned.
According to Article 9.4 of the FIVB Medical Regulations, a sanction of three (3) months ineligibility starting from the provisional suspension (13 July 2010) has been determined.
The FIVB would like to once more warn on the hazardousness of dietary supplements containing Prohibited Substances which are most times not mentioned on the product labels and provides for the online FIVB Anti-Doping education programme “We Play it Clean” where athletes and team support personnel receive information on this matter.
