August 5, 2011 - Statement from WADA Director General David Howman following the NFL announcement that testing for human growth hormone (hGH) had been included in the collective bargaining agreement with its players:

“The NFL agreement that allows for random hGH testing of its players is a very positive development in the fight against doping in sport.

“It is vital that hGH testing is increased and the NFL’s example will hopefully encourage other sports federations to follow suit.

“There has not been enough testing for hGH since the test was first introduced at the Summer Olympics in Athens in 2004 - this agreement will help to change that.

“It is also significant because the collective bargaining is a strong indication that the players are prepared to take responsibility, that they understand hGH must be eradicated from their sport.

“The major sports leagues are working diligently to combat the problem of hGH and their efforts are to be applauded.

“WADA will continue to assist them in any way it can.”
