May 16, 2012 - WADA will undertake a number of activities at the 2012 SportAccord Convention which will serve to highlight the ongoing review of the World Anti-Doping Code and programs the Agency has designed to increase anti-doping awareness.
The Code is currently undergoing a two-year review, and as part of the highly-consultative process WADA’s Code Drafting team will have a number of meetings in Quebec City throughout the week.
WADA actively encourages contributions towards the review process and the Code Drafting Team will take the opportunity to discuss developments with representatives from various International Federations (IFs) and sports umbrella organizations.
These meeting will serve as a further opportunity to involve WADA signatories at every possible step of the Code Review Process.
WADA also will be promoting two of its anti-doping awareness programs in Quebec City, welcoming SportAccord visitors to its stand to learn more about the Outreach Model and Say NO! To Doping campaign.
Outreach has become a familiar feature at SportAccord over the last decade and visitors will again have a chance to see how WADA reaches out directly to athletes at major events worldwide, and how sports organizations can adopt and adapt the model for their own needs.
Say NO! To Doping! has similar turn-key characteristics that allow easy and cost-effective implementation for WADA and its signatories. WADA staff will be on hand throughout the week to offer advice on how best to set up an anti-doping campaign.
SportAccord also offers vital opportunities for WADA officials to meet with a variety of IFs and give presentations to umbrella organizations such as the Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF) and Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).
In addition, WADA Director General David Howman will take part in a debate on sports governance, which will focus on whether or not traditional corporate practices should apply to sporting bodies, particularly in light of the ongoing financial problems faced in many areas of the world.
Mr. Howman will join a panel of four for what is the first of two debates at LawAccord on the morning of May 22. The other debate will ask whether good governance keeps sport out of court.
