October 24, 2012 - WADA Director General David Howman has been honored with the Master of the Game Award by the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School.

Mr. Howman, who joined WADA as Chief Operating Officer and Special Counsel in 2003 before taking over as General Director later that year, was presented with the award at the 19th Sports Law Conference in Milwaukee on October 19.

The Award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the sports industry and exemplify the highest level of professionalism in their fields.

Previous recipients include women’s rights advocate and Olympic gold medalist Donna de Verona, and former Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Bud Selig.

As well as collecting the Award, Mr. Howman joined a panel to discuss the issue of corruption in sport and delivered a presentation on how WADA could serve as a model for setting up a worldwide organization to combat this issue.

Before moving to Montreal, New Zealander Mr. Howman practiced as a barrister specializing in sports law in his home city of Wellington. He also served as Chairman of the New Zealand Sports Drug Agency between 2000 and 2003 and was previously its counsel.

Mr. Howman represented many prominent New Zealand athletes earlier in his career, and served as President of New Zealand Tennis and Commissioner for New Zealand Rugby for a number of years.
