Puerto Rico hosts First Play True Day

April 30, 2014 - The clean sport message was carried to Puerto Rico recently, as the Anti-Doping Commission of Puerto Rico organized the country’s very first Play True Day. This was the result of a pledge made last year by 17 South American countries who committed to celebrating Play True Day on 10 April each year, thus making it an issue of public interest in the region.

Play True Day involves 17 countries from across the Latin American region, all of whom pledged their commitment to doping-free sport in the Declaration of Montevideo.

The Declaration of Montevideo was ratified during last year’s Latin American Anti-Doping Education Symposium held in Uruguay, at which the development and implementation of anti-doping programs was discussed.

Play True Day in Puerto Rico – with the support of the UNESCO Fund for the Elimination of Doping in Sport, and under the auspices of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Sport Ministry – included a ‘Play True Theatre Contest’, a project which began in June 2013 and involves high school students and athletes from all across the islands. The top three plays – which covered examples of doping-related scenarios – were selected to be featured on the day itself. The plays received the support of the Anti-Doping Commission of Puerto Rico and the national sport authorities.

“The creation of Play True Day demonstrates a noticeable impact in the region since last year’s Montevideo Declaration,” said WADA President Sir Craig Reedie.

“Theatre is an innovative way of reaching a young audience, and alerting them to the dangers and consequences of doping.”
