June 6, 2014 - A record number of 28 countries attended the 11th Asia / Oceania Region Intergovernmental Ministerial Meeting on Anti-Doping in Sport on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea this week.

WADA was supported at the meeting by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) representing the sport movement and 28 participant countries representing government.

Chaired by H.E. Dr. Kim Chong, Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Republic of Korea, and a WADA Foundation Board member, the meeting resulted in unanimous agreement to support a 3% increase in WADA’s annual budget. The meeting also saw the governments of Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands commit to complete the final stages of the ratification of the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport.

“This 11th Asia / Oceania Region meeting saw a show of solidarity from all countries who attended”, said WADA Director General David Howman.

“It was pleasing to see such impressive commitment shown by the governments of the region to continue to invest their time and efforts in fighting doping in sport, and therefore protecting the rights of the clean athletes of the world.”
