June 17, 2014 - WADA Athlete Committee Chair Beckie Scott carried the baton for worldwide clean sport last week, as she attended the IWG World Conference on Women and Sport in Helsinki, Finland from 12 – 15 June.

Scott, who was a gold and silver Olympic medalist in cross country skiing, was handed a baton containing a petition of names in support of clean sport by fellow cross country skier and Olympic medalist Aino-Kaisa Saarinen. The petition was signed by thousands of athletes, coaches and spectators at more than 100 sports events in Finland between 2008 and 2013.

“It was a great honour to be in Finland to receive the Golden Baton,” said Scott.

“Driving the message of clean sport has long been part of my life, particularly as I experienced first-hand what an affect those who decide to cheat can have on the careers and prospects of the clean athletes of this world. It was great to see such a positive endorsement for clean and fair sport through the petition,” she added.

The petition was part of FINADA’s ‘Clean Win’ program, which honours clean athletes and the values of fair play, and helps bring clean athletes into the spotlight.

The 6th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport was themed ‘Lead the Change – Be the Change’.
